Enjoyable Morning Meeting

This has been a tough year in 5th grade. Last year there were 2 out of 3 teachers in 4th grade who were there in school in the beginning of the year, but 2 of the teachers were out of school for several months.  One was out due to maternity leave.  The subs could not handle the classes and it was mayhem. At the end of the year they split one of the class into 2 smaller classes of 10 students each.  We have spent a great deal of time in meetings and working on behaviors.  It’s often a struggle during morning meeting for them to have self-control and not be talking to their friends.

Yesterday we had a koosh ball greeting where we throw the koosh ball to someone and greet them and it goes to another student so everyone is greeted.  After that we continue the pattern, but I add 3 more koosh balls to the greeting.  While doing it someone started singing and everyone chimed in.  We threw the koosh balls and continued singing for 5 minutes.  It was a blast.  The principal poked her head in and had a big smile on her face.  When it was done several students said it was the best morning meeting we had ever had. I agree with that as well.

Sounds like just what the kids needed. This is relationship building in real time. It matters so much. Thanks for sharing it with us.

  2. Morning meeting is such a strong community builder. I think it is the most powerful tool to fix behavior problems.
