Groundhog Chaos

Write. Share. Give.

Yesterday was not a stellar day for 5th grade. The weather was warm and sunny with temps. in the 70’s and the kids were excited to go out for recess. That soon changed when  information got out that some 2nd graders, who were out at recess decided to go chase a groundhog and actually pet the animal.  No one was hurt.  The 5th graders had just gone outside when the announcement came across the speaker saying that no one could be outside and it would be indoor recess.

Fortunately/unfortunately the 5th grades have been working on argument reading and writing and having debates.  There was chaos, yelling “Kill the groundhog.”  Posters were created and taped up all over the classroom.  Kids were using red marker to look like blood.

The pararprofessionals could not get them under control. About 10 students were called out on the carpet for their behavior. Parents were notified and letters of apologies were written.  This morning  I had a conversation with my class letting them know the decision was made to ensure their safety while the animal control officer captured the animal. Unfortunately it was poor timing for them because it was during their recess.

I also told them, your young, you make bad choices, but you learn from them.

It is a terrible thing to lose your recess when you’re 10 and it’s warm and sunny and in the 70’s!
