March Slice of Life

March Slice of Life

As my fifth graders are wrapping up their opinion piece there is a bit of electricity in the air.  They have chosen their topics and have been researching and writing their papers. Today I showed them various ways to include a rebuttal.  I could feel their energy build as they contemplated the best way to make their point.  Over the weekend I wrote comments about their work on Google Docs.  I got many thank you’s.  One  of the topics that students are writing about is single gender classrooms.  One of my girls has been very vocal about this issue.  I commented that she had a very strong lead and she responded back to me: I have a very strong opinion.  It made me chuckle.  I love the energy that my students have exhibited this year in writing.  I only wish that they had the opportunity to participate in The Classroom Slice of Life Challenge.  This is my first time teaching fifth grade writing and I just couldn’t fit it in, but next year with a year under my belt I am definitely going to join.
